What a PERFECT sentiment for the first Maynard video for the brand new "MF Vault!" What's it all about indeed. I've been asking that question ever since the 5th of November. OY!!!
In THIS case, however, my dear friend Dan Potts is sending me some choice Maynard recordings that have really not been heard very much. These are things that come from radio broadcasts, and live recordings from around the world.
Maynard's career spanned quite a bit of time, and in the same way as his good friend Miles Davis, Maynard had "eras" where he approached his groups differently and with a different artistic approach. In the early days, fresh off of Stan Kenton's big band in the late 1950s, "Boss" (our preferred nickname for him–thanks to Denis DiBlasio from the era that I was with him) had a book of music that was chockablock with originals and arrangements by some of the greatest writers of all time:
To name just a FEW!!!
The book was great, handwritten and now at The University of North Texas. Some of the music from those years has been published, and ALL of it that still exists is at UNT being taken care of in the manner that it should be: as a national treasure.
(I made SURE of that, Y'all!)
Here is an amazing rendition of the old pop tune "Alfie" Composed by Burt Bacharach and arranged for Boss here by Willie Maiden. The ensemble is The Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra and the broadcast was from Cologne, Germany in January 1968
A BEAUTIFUL chart and a HUGE thank you to Dan for the recording.
DIG!
