In putting together a new category today (The MF Vault) I was reminded of this delightful piece of music by my pal Robert Lamm, Many, MANY of you know Bobby for his voice, his music, his arrangements, his poetry, his honesty, and his genius-level songwriting for DECADES with the super group Chicago.
The album that this particular gem comes from is not Chicago, but rather one of Bobby's own solo projects. This one is called "Living Proof" and it was produced with the partnership of the delightful talent, the late-great Trent Gardner (producer, compser, trombonist) Here is a wee synopsis:
Living Proof is filled with interesting lyrics and cutting edge music and is proof that Robert Lamm remains at his best, and raises the musical bar even higher since his previous release, “Subtlety and Passion”. In addition to the talents of Robert Lamm, the CD also features the excellence of long time collaborator Hank Linderman (Guitar/Vocals), Trent Gardner (Production/Trombone), and showcases the vocal talents and writing skills of rising star ZoSia Karbowiak as well as the talents of Jason Scheff and Drew Hester. But, what does this all amount to? Living Proof that Lamm’s creative juices still flow.

The imagery on this song-video is all about the early years of Chicago with their virtuosoi and much-beloved guitarist-composer-vocalist Terry Kath who tragically passed away in 1978. To me, and many others, Terry's untimely passing rperesents one of the great "what if" questions in music. Right up there with John Lennon, John Coltrane, Jimmy Hendrix, and Clifford Brown I believe.
It is poignant, beautiful , has a SERIOUS groove, cool production values, and a typically BRILLIANT Robert Lamm song-form. Knocks me out every time I hear it!
Enjoy!
Wow! Had to put the headphones on for this one. Thanks for sharing ❤️
