Let's Share Some Music!

Writer's picture: Steve WiestSteve Wiest

LAWD Ha'b MERCY! I don't care which side of the ocean you're on, or which side of the polarized and worldwide political divide you may find yourself...MUSIC is what we ALL share on a most profound level. You've heard it said that music is THE universal language, and I believe that is true. As one who is also a prose-birther (thank you Spider Robinson) when I simply can't find the best words anywhere...music speaks volumes. I've also heard it said that jazz is the ULTIMATE democracy (as an aside I wish that THAT had been on option this past 5 November... just sayin)

So here are a couple of things that I like. Please share what YOU are digging and like to go back to in times of trouble or just cuz in the comments below.

Let the listening party begin!

Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland (New York Phil with Lenny)

MAn-Oh-MAN! I am SUCH a fan of Aaron Copland...and this one is my favorite. To me, Copland captured the absolute ESSENCE of what I believe the American Experiment was and could still be. The salt of the earth experience of good hard-working honest folk. Indeed, that is a universal concept, but somehow Aaron seemed to grab the Americana that I grew up with every summer with my Mother's people when we visited them in Cameron, Missouri. I always cry when I hear this as well as getting chills. Just delightful!

Some Skunk Funk (LIVE) by Randy Brecker and featuring both Randy and Michael: The Brecker Brothers!

On on the other end of the spectrum, I LOVE me some Randy Brecker! He composed this iconic treasure a long time ago and it became a portrait of not only his playing but his legendary brother Michael. This particular version just knocks me out and ALWAYS makes me feel better! CHILLS!!!!!!

And one of MINE! Yeah, I'm one of those rare Cats I guess that enjoys listening to something that I have created. Why not? And I hope that you do too! This is from my jazz fusion funky project called Phröntrange. The tune is titled "Violet Iris" and tells a story that you will see on the intro. I am SO honored and thrilled that my extremely talented cello playing son Matthew is also on the introduction to the song as well. What a JOY!

Enjoy Maynard Ferguson's rendition of "Alfie" as performed with The Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra, circa 1968. The One and Only's power, passion, romanticism, and sizzle displayed here is completely off the hook!! 😱😊 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qiAnVBjvMc

  4. A bit about the band and broadcast
